A Ronald and Rose Recipe Short Story
"Ron! RONALD!" Rose called from the kitchen. Ronald poked his head around the door.
"What's the matter?" he asked. "We don't have to leave for another hour." That was as far as he got.
Rose stood in the middle of a cook's worst nightmare. The flour bin was upside-down on the floor, and there was about a half-inch coating every flat surface in the near vicinity. Rose herself resembled something straight out of a haunted house tale.
"What happened?" Ronald chuckled. Rose glared at him.
"You wouldn't laugh if the cat decided to visit you when YOU were cooking!" she defended herself.
"What cat?" was Ronald's predictable response.
"Spot," said Rose with utmost contempt. Ronald stifled another laugh. Their neighbors had a cat whom they named Spot. He was always underfoot, and Rose had never liked him, since she thought 'Spot' should only be used for dogs.
"What are you making?" Ronald asked, trying to change the subject.
"Mom's peanut butter cookies. For the party," Rose explained.
"But they don't need flour!"
Rose ignored this logic and came to the point.
"Could you please help me clean up? I'll never be done in time to leave if you don't."
Ronald grinned again, but agreed to help her. Mom was busy doing the laundry before they left, so there was no one else to help Rose.
"Thank you!" Rose said, and they both got to work. Ronald salvaged the flour that was still untainted while Rose went for the broom.
Soon, they had cleaned most of the kitchen. Rose dashed for the ingredients for the cookies. She glanced at the recipe.
"Ron, would you get an egg, please?" she asked. "I have everything else." She set to work, stirring vigorously.
Before long, the last cookies were out of the oven, and Rose, sucking a burn on her finger, turned the oven off. She glanced at the clock.
"Thank you, Ron!" she said. "I only just have time to change. I couldn't have done it without you!" She had cleaned up everything while the cookies were baking, so as soon as she put them on the rack to cool, she dashed out of the kitchen.
"I'll be right down!" she called.
Ronald didn't answer.
There was too much hot cookie in his mouth.
